There are several ways to vary your Æbleskiver
The addition of fruit, sausage,
cheese, or nuts is popular.
Danish sausage, grated cheese lightly rolled into a ball, or chopped
nuts addsto the texture. The addition should be included after the
batter is poured into the wells. Not doing so could cause it to
fry on the sides of the wells and stick. Reduce the amount of batter
poured into the wells to eliminate overflow. Note that when the
Æbleskivers is ready to serve, the addition may be very hot. |

Another is to flavor the batter
itself.
Flavoring the batter is an easy way to add an extra dimension to
your Æbleskivers.
Some traditional recipes include cardamom, lemon zest, cinnamon,
vanilla, or nutmeg. When adding spice, better to use a small amount;

A third variation is to flavor
the batter and add fruit or nuts.
Perhaps cinnamon and a slice of apple, lemon zest and poppy seeds,
or banana flavoring and coconut. Use your imagination. Toppings
should complement the textures and flavors. Lingonberry jam is the
traditional topping, but finding it may prove difficult. Raspberry
jam is widely accepted. Æbleskiver is a year round treat. In
addition to the holidays, it goes well with a Champagne Sunday Brunch. |
