People have asked
how Æbleskiver was invented. No one really knows for sure.
One theory put forth by the Solvang Museum in California was from
an article published in 1977 by Karl Jorgensen, former owner of
the Santa Ynez Visitors Magazine that went something like this:
In a time when Vikings roamed the coastal waters of England and the
Atlantic, one band had been particularly hard hit in battle. They
returned to their ship with horn helmets and shields dented. To
regain their strength, they enjoyed one of their favorite dishes
- pancakes. As they did not have the proper cookware, they greased
their shields and poured the batter into the dents. What came
of that day is what we now call Æbleskiver.
Whether this theory is believable or not, Æbleskiver are delicious
and go well with Sunday Brunch or as an evening snack.
